Hannah's Big Adventure

So, many people have been curious what happened with Hannah and her exciting three week hospital stay so here is the story in short (by dad):

Hannah has been a really healthy little girl aside from the occasional toddler cold. On Friday August 5th Hannah was in Tulsa, Oklahoma with her brother, mom, and Nonna. They were there visiting her Uncle Hef and Aunt Katie. Friday and Saturday were normal days where the kids were having fun and dealing with both crazy prairie storms and excessive heat. But that wasn't slowing anyone down.

Saturday night Hannah had a hard time sleeping and woke up a lot. By morning she was weak and was having labored asymmetrical breathing. Matthew stayed with Nonna while Bonnie took Hannah to urgent care. By some fluke urgent care wouldn't take Hannah and she was forced to take her to the Children's Hospital at St. Francis. This proved to be a blessing!

Hannah spent the day Saturday being treated for asthma-like symptoms and by evening Daddy was on his way driving the 600 miles to Tulsa. By morning, Hannah was worse and it was discovered that her CO2 levels were climbing dangerously high and her O2 levels were dropping dangerously low "Acute Respiratory Failure". Sunday she was moved to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and about 4 hours later she was intubated and put on a ventilator.

Her blood gasses returned to normal with help from the ventilator. Everyone could then take a deep breath and begin to try to figure out what was going on. She was heavily sedated and underwent a battery of tests over the next week or so. They did two spinal taps, two MRI scans, two CT scans, an EMG, an EEG, and they took 50 ml of blood over a period of a week for diagnostic testing. Everything was normal.

She had a nava catheter in her nose that measured her diaphragmatic activity and they started to notice more and more activity. Once they stepped down the sedation they discovered that her breathing was improving. After two weeks her daytime breathing had improved to a promising point, but her breathing would stop when she fell asleep.

After 14 days at St. Francis we were finally able to get insurance to approve a transport and admission to the Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. It took a lot of fighting and some help from some pretty high up friends at Vanderbilt to get her moved. We still have a lot of thank yous to make for that one.

Bonnie and Hannah was flown by Vanderbilt LifeFlight on a King Air 200 fixed wing plane to Nashville on Saturday August 20th. The flight went smoothly and Hannah was in the PICU at Vandy by dinnertime. St. Francis was great to us, but the standards of care and the resources available at Vanderbilt were refreshing.

Once they had her stable and had familiarized themselves with her history, they began working on Hannah with renewed vigor. Dr Mace, our wonderful pediatrician, had been involved from day one by keeping in touch with us and our doctors and getting Hannah's records to anyone that it would make since to show them to. She was now on hand to help the new attending physicians and neurologists to get the full picture of what was going on.

The doctors decided to repeat the MRI scans and EMG tests. News tests were run and scores of doctors visited Hannah. Still no one was any closer to knowing why she went into respiratory failure. Everyone agreed that she seemed to be doing better.

On Tuesday August 23rd they decided to pull her tube out and see how she does. She did great with her breathing, but she didn't really sleep for the next couple of days. The PICU doctors really wanted to see her sleep well before moving her to another floor, but in the end we decided that the PICU unit was the reason she wasn't sleeping. We got her transferred to another floor with her own quiet room on Thursday August 25th and she started sleeping with healthy breathing almost immediately.

By Saturday she was ready to go home. She is doing great and apart for getting the strength back that she lost from being in a bed for three weeks she is getting back to her old self.

The best that they doctors have is that she had some sort of "Post-viral neuropathy" (such as "atypical Guillain-Barre syndrome" that caused "Bilateral phrenic nerve paralysis" through demyelinating that was specific to the diaphragm.

Mother's Day was SO MUCH cooler outdoors, and called for a trip to the zoo...Hannah's first that she noticed the animals. Mommy played hard with her big boy, and everyone had a rockin' good time!

This is Matthew's favorite part -- carrying the Bible. Matthew does this part all the time. We did not put him up to this -- it was his idea! Hopefully Josh can YouTube the video I took of him singing "Holy Spirit Come to Us" (repeat 4x), his processional chant, while. That one comes out a lot, my favorite being the morning I was in labor at home with Hannah -- the Holy Spirit was certainly with us -- she came in 2 1/2 hours! Our favorite recent variant of the chant: "Holy Spirit You're the Best" (repeat 4x). No kidding.

Matthew was a cow for Halloween, replete with "moo" sound effects!

Cow on bike? Cow refused to eat beef chili; opted for veggie. Duh.

The cow learned quickly how to score loot by climbing stairs up to the large bowls of c-a-n-d-y. However, "restraint" is not in the cow's vocabulary yet. Attempted to hit same houses numerous times...good pastures.

The morning started with a present and some fruit...

Matthew was happy to have some apple and pose for the camera

We took the Birthday Boy to the Old Spaghetti Factory because he loves trains and pasta (both of which are found inside!)

After lunch we headed down to the bicentennial mall to play in the fountains with the other kids...
it was a hot, but the water was perfect!

I had a great birthday, and the next day we went to the Watertown Jazz festival where I practiced my walking skills!

Celebration Week

Celebration Week is in full swing here for the Nashville Bogens. The day after Josh's birthday, we spent the Fourth of July at Uncle Booner & Aunt Vangie's house.

Matthew played on the trampoline briefly after a short swim.

Later, we went out for grilled cheeses, slushes, and ice cream at Sonic. Matthew enjoyed flirting with the cute girls. Uncle Hef noted Matthew's penchance for the "sexy librarian" look. That's Mommy's boy.

Daddy's Birthday

Daddy's Birthday is July 3rd. Daddy chose to eat gourmet pizza in the park with Matthew and Mommy.

Matthew can take a few steps on his own now, but Daddy helps him on the wall.

Matthew can actually hold himself on the monkey bars, but you gotta spot him...he doesn't understand how far he might fall!! What a little tough guy!

Brooklyn Visit - Part 1

First Off, the reason and for the trip... The little cutie Ila (although Josh's camera skills don't do her justice) in one of her dozens of delicate hand made sweaters. Isn't she beautiful!

We miss these guys a lot! Andy has Ulka (our little goddaughter); Mommy has Matthew; and nobody can contain Ishaan's fun (he's our favorite 4 year old)!

Brooklyn Visit - Part 2

Matthew took Mommy and Daddy to see the beautiful cherry trees in bloom at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens...

Anastasia and Matthew had fun sitting under the trees sharing cereal and looking at the pretty trees. She brought her parents along as well!!

Before leaving town, we visited Matthew's old playground at Vanderbilt where we met up with Charlie and were lucky not to be shot by the young orthodox boy with the bow and arrow taking aim in the background... gotta love bklyn!

Earth Day 2007

Matthew visited Centennial Park for his first Earth Day, where he heard a free concert from the Gabe Dixon Band, checked out the older kids, played in ice, ate french fries (?), and squinted into the setting sun...

On the walk back to the car (yes, it is possible to take an urban walk in Nashville!!!), Matthew and Daddy encountered the remnants of a fraternity Luau party that had apparently begun at noon... you can't see the cops on the opposite corner, but you can make out the leather bar on the lawn. Daddy's sticking to coffee.

Matthew was overjoyed that his case of Veggie Booty finally arrived after two weeks from Nevada. He began restocking straight away, as his last bag was strewn across the kitchen floor...

Matthew was a little bear for Halloween, courtesy of Josh's cousin Adam. Here he is at home, a bit stunned after a fabulous parade in Park Slope.
Matthew stops for snacks (not the candy kind!!) on the steps of the Catholic church. Daddy managed to color-coordinate with Mr. Bear without even trying!
Outside "Pumpkins," one of the many Park Slope stores giving out candy to trick-or-treaters. Mommy & Daddy didn't have the gumption to use little Matthew to score themselves some candy!
Matthew was very excited to get going in his autumnal stroller. Our little bear melted many hearts this evening...

Apple Picking in Jersey

Matthew went with Mom & Dad to the 'Garden State' to pick apples off of one of Matthew's favorite things: trees!

Now that he has gotten his grabbing skill down he can pick apples right off the tree!

Look at that beauty (the apple or the bambino)!

Matthew is pulling out all the stops with his smiles...this one at his favorite man: Daddy!! He's tenaciously holding on to his favorite new toy ball.
Matthew is also testing things out with his mouth, including the ball. He just can't figure out how to get it into his mouth!! He's also holding his head up, sucking his thumbs, and beginning to laugh! Three months old this week!

He's cute awake and asleep!

Labor Day Trip to the Zoo

On Monday, Matthew took a trip up to Boston to see the sights. One of the things on his agenda was to see what it was like to go swimming.

Matthew was not quite prepared for just how exciting it is to be in a pool.

He floats like a cork!

Mommy and Matthew had a blast... but watch out for those crazy 5 year olds!

Matthew Visits Kentucky!

Matthew made his first of many trips to Russellville, Kentucky, where Mommy grew up and where Mommy & Daddy met in high school.
Matthew smiled like never before for Nonna, with her crazy faces!
Matthew met Uncle Hef at the airport. Later, after Uncle Hef carefully drove him to Russellville, they played a while at Nonna & Pop's house.
Matthew was very active as he reunited with Pops!
Matthew enjoyed Katie's experienced baby-holding. Actually, he fell in love. Matthew stared at Katie the entire hour-long drive back to Nashville!

Matthew Visits Nashville!!

Matthew met his Uncle Zac in Nashville (with Grandma always nearby).
Four generations gathered in Woodbury: Great Aunt Diane, Grandma Carol, Daddy, Matthew, and Memaw Judy.
Grandpa and Grandma celebrated some happy news with Matthew in Woodbury.
Matthew took his first flight at age 5 1/2 weeks! He made sure that his carry on bag did not have any liquids or gels and quickly passed through New York security, garnering numerous smiles.

Saturday in the Park

Matthew attended his first social engagement today...a birthday party in Prospect Park. Matthew enjoyed looking at the sky and trees without the impediment of the windows he faces at home! He was quite charming and on his best behavior. Here, Josh holds Matthew and takes a picture at the same time!!! Go Daddy!

Matthew meets Caroline

Caroline brought her mom & dad (Elizabeth & Stephen) over for dinner tonight.
She passed out after dinner, but Matthew was wide awake!
He knows that he can realx in the arm of our southern friends...
